In February, UWA College celebrated their first cohort of students who successfully completed their UWA College courses and progressed to their undergraduate degrees at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

Progressing from the 8-month UWA College Diploma in Commerce, Diploma in Science and UWA Foundation Program, 13 students from China, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore and Malaysia are now one step closer to their future career. These students are starting their UWA degrees in majors ranging from business and science to health and IT.

“We’re excited to have witnessed UWA College come to life over the past 10 months, where our students have been at the forefront of a transformative pathway experience that’s equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed at UWA,” said UWA College Director, Amanda Turner.

After successfully completing their studies, students participated in the ‘Getting Started at UWA’ early transition program. This program is designed to further support UWA College students in their progression to UWA and adapting to university life.

Malaysian student and UWA College Student Ambassador, Shu Wen, said her experience studying the UWA Foundation Program helped her to learn useful academic skills, familiarize herself with the campus, and most importantly, make friendships that have remained strong even after she’s left the college.

Shu Wen explained, “While the classes challenged us to think critically, there were plenty of events going on in college to keep us involved and entertained. We were lucky to have teachers who gave us advice and guided us through getting ready for university life at UWA. If anything, UWA College will always be like a second home to me amidst busy university life.”

Having now been studying at UWA for 5 weeks, Shu Wen says, “In my first few weeks studying at UWA, I have been as excited as I was when I was starting off at UWA College. The past few months have been eventful, and I'm really looking forward to everything that's in store for me in the next couple of years.”

Milestone achievement

Having opened just under a year ago in June 2022, this marks a major milestone for UWA College, UWA and INTO. In July, UWA College Diploma students will be joining UWA’s Graduation Ceremony to recognize the completion of their first award course as part of their UWA journey.

“Having our students participate in the graduation ceremony alongside graduating UWA students is another great example of how UWA College students are embedded in the UWA community,” explained Kate Gresham, UWA College’s Academic Director.

“After all their hard work in their pathway programs and in adjusting to a new life here in Perth, it’s a joy to be able to celebrate our students' achievements, together with UWA.”
